Sarla Chandra
Born in 1943, Sarla Chandra is a Science graduate from St. John’s College, Agra, India. She has been immersed in the world of painting for over 40 years. She often combines her works with her studies of Indian philosophy, mythology, and scriptures — subjects which she manifests onto the canvas. For her, painting is a form of meditation, allowing her to study ontology. Her paintings are a personal expression of her love for Indian culture and mythology. Her art is characterized by hope, peace, and self-religion. Sarla has experimented with different mediums, including oil, watercolours, metal embossing, parchment, tree bark, and hand-made silver and gold foil. Lavanya (decoration) and Gati (rhythm) are some of the finer elements of her stylization. Sarla's brush generates energy, drawing inspiration from all faces of nature and multifarious traditions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Sufism, and Christianity. This energy pulsates through all forms of her work, linking them together in “one dance of life till ecstasy.”
